Media Studies Year 9

newspaperIn Year 9 we introduce students to Media Studies and students start work on GCSE coursework modules.  For their taster session students complete a magazine project where they analyse two magazine front covers before planning, making and evaluating a cover of their own.  In the spring and summer terms students work on a "cross media" case study where they analyse how a TV series is promoted through its trailer, website and poster before planning, making and evaluating a poster, website homepage and storyboard for a trailer to promote a TV series they have planned themselves.  At the end of the Summer term students work on a short photographed storyboarding/filming unit designed to familiarise them with using moving image editing software. 

GCSE Course Outline

30% of students’ final grade will be assessed through coursework and 70% through a final exam.  Students have to complete three in depth coursework projects all of which involve a mixture of research, planning and practical tasks. Past coursework topics have included, TV promotion, film promotion, web promotion, magazines, tabloid newspapers. 

At the end of Year 11, students sit a 1½ hour exam in a topic chosen by the exam board. Recent exam topics have been:
