Year 8 Options
When a student begins her Year 9 curriculum she is embarking on a very exciting phase of her education.
Years 9, 10 and 11 lead up to GCSE and BTEC examinations, and it is a fantastic opportunity for our students to take control of their education and shape their future.
Our ethos is to ensure that our curriculum is ambitious, challenging and meets the needs of all our students. The variety of subjects available demonstrates its breadth and is reflective of the aspirations and future career pathways of our students.
The Options Booklet gives an overview of our Core curriculum, the Extended curriculum and our Option subjects. It explains how the subjects are grouped, as well as information about each individual subject and what students will cover as part of their course. It also gives parents and students insight into the components of each specification before those all-important choices are made.
Option choices should be made very carefully and subjects selected which are as balanced as possible but also meet the strengths and aspirations of each student.
Whilst we endeavour to ensure that we meet the choices of each individual student, this cannot always be guaranteed as the viability of any course is dependent upon the number of students who select it and the staffing available.
In Year 9 students study an Extended curriculum of Art, STEM, Citizenship, RS, Music and Computer Science in rotation throughout the year. This is unique to us at Carshalton High School for Girls and although it is not examined, it continues to build on Key Stage 3 curriculum content. We have introduced this additional curriculum time as we believe it is important for our students to have a greater depth of knowledge and aspiration in these subjects, hence their continuation into Year 9.
Key Stage 4 holds a wealth of exciting and interesting opportunities for every student, and we wish all our students every success as we work together throughout this time.
