“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”
Dance is a compulsory subject at KS3 and taught in mixed ability tutor groups once a week. At KS4 students have the opportunity to begin their AQA GCSE Dance course. At KS5 students can study BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts: Dance.
The dance curriculum at Carshalton High School for Girls aims to enrich students' education by developing their creativity, social and interactive skills. Students also develop fitness levels and performance skills through the study of dance from different cultures, styles and periods of history. Students are taught to express themes and ideas through movement and encouraged to develop body awareness. Students are given the opportunity to develop their confidence as well as sensitivity to others through creating and performing dances in an environment which is supportive.
Tasks are also based around professional dance works, where students develop their appreciation and analysis skills. Students regularly evaluate their work, as well as that of professionals and their peers through oral and written feedback. Students are able to improve their work and develop their verbal and non verbal communication. All students are expected to dance barefoot, or alternatively students may wear jazz dance shoes.
Students have the opportunity to perform in several events throughout the year. These include our annual dance show in December and a new performance event in March/April.
The department have links with the Royal Academy Of Dance and are currently in the process of creating a unique experience with other organisations in the local area.
