At Carshalton High School for Girls, we are committed to ensuring that every student learns in a calm, focused and supportive environment. Young people now live much of their lives online, and while technology offers many positives, it can also create distraction, stress and pressure. We want our students to feel confident, connected and fully present in their learning. 

Smartphones are prohibited in Year 7, students are permitted “Brick” phones and trackers are permitted. From 2nd December 2025, students in Years 8–11 will follow our phone-free school day, supported by the Yondr programme. This means students will keep their phone for travelling to and from school, but it will be safely locked away during the school day.

How it works

• Each student has a personal Yondr pouch.
• At morning tutor time, students place their phone, smartwatch and earbuds/AirPods into the pouch and lock it.
• The pouch stays with them all day and is stored in their school bag.
• Students unlock their pouch at the end of the day at designated stations as they leave the site.

This approach reduces distraction, improves focus, supports wellbeing and encourages positive social interaction. It also aligns closely with our school values: CHSG CARES – Community, Accountability, Resilience, Empowerment and Sisterhood.

Expectations

• The pouch is essential daily equipment (like uniform or workbooks). If they lose their pouch, a replacement must be purchased from the school.
• If a student forgets their pouch, a Level 1 centralised detention will be issued.
• If a phone, smartwatch or Earbuds/AirPods are seen in school, a Level 2 sanction (ARC)will apply.
• Deliberate damage or tampering with the pouch, including use of magnets, will lead to a Level 3 sanction (suspension) and an £18 replacement charge.

Students with medical needs will receive an adapted arrangement, and parents needing to contact their child should do so via the school office.
