    • CHSG Food Bank Collection Drive

      This summer's CHSG Food Bank Collection Drive has got off to a flying start! Year 7 & 8 have been very generous with their donations, whilst trying to out-do each other's box decorations, and these have been gratefully received by our local charities in Sutton. We must also say a huge thank you to Tracey Collins for delivering the donation boxes every Friday since the collection drive started this June. This week we are looking forward to receiving donations from Year 9 and Year 10 & 12 will donate their contributions in a week's time.

      Thank you to tutors and staff for all your support with this collection drive! Your donations and those of your tutees have already gone and will continue to go a very long way in helping those in need in our local community. 

      Winners of the best decorated boxes will be announced at the end of June!

      Sutton Night Watch picked up half of year 8’s food donations.

      Other half was given to Carshalton Little Food Cupboard below.

      Both charities said thank you so much.

    • Year 12 Psychology - Freud trip

      On Wednesday 14th June, week our Year 12 Psychology students went on the annual departmental trip to the Freud Museum. They had an opportunity to learn about the fascinating story behind Freud's arrive in London. After our visit we enjoyed the fantastic weather, with a picnic in the historic Green Park.

    • Year 7 literacy celebration

      Year 7 Literacy Catch Up celebrated the end of their programme today. Both 6th Reading Mentors and Year 7 Readers spent some time thanking each other and wishing each other the best for the future.

      Year 7 Readers gave their mentors the book 'Stay Happy While You Study' (a book about prioritising wellbeing at university) and 6th Formers gave the gift of 'You're Never Too Small to Make a Difference' by Greta Thunberg. It's been wonderful to see students from lower and upper school build friendships over reading.

    • Year 8 Options Evening

      Year 8 had an assembly in which the Options process was introduced and explained. We understand that there is a lot of information to take in, so all the key messages and information are also contained in the Options Booklet, which also gives an overview of the Key Stage 4 curriculum, the Options process and details about all subjects. Your child will also be given a hard copy to bring home for ease of reference. Please read this carefully as it will provide insight into the components of each specification before those all-important choices are made. 

      There are also a wide selection of information videos on the Year 8 options page. These have been made by subject leaders and contain further information about course content, further study and careers information. 

      We ask that you and your child consider these choices very carefully and select subjects which are as balanced as possible but also meet her strengths and aspirations. We will endeavour to meet the choices of each individual student but unfortunately this cannot always be guaranteed as the viability of any course is dependent upon the number of students who select it and the staffing available to us.  

      The next key date in the process is Options Evening on Thursday 20th April from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. On this evening there will be a presentation explaining the Options process which will take place at the start of the evening and will be repeated at 7.00pm, so you can be flexible about your time of arrival. The evening will also give you the opportunity to meet and hear from leaders of option subjects.

    • International Women's Day 2023

      International Women’s Day

      Over the course of this half term we have been teaching students about International Women’s Day (IWD)and organising events to celebrate the globally recognised day on Wednesday 8th March.  

      We have celebrated the IWD 2023 campaign theme #EmbraceEquity and ensured that our students understand the difference between equity and equality.  As a school we #EmbraceEquity. We recognise that each of our students have a different set of circumstances and starting points and we allocate our resources to support individuals to drive success for all. We embrace diversity, and we embrace inclusion and it is important that our students understand this too.

      During the week commencing Mon 6th March year group assemblies were led by Mrs Driver, Assistant Headteacher. These assemblies focused on International Women’s Day #EmbraceEquity and introduced students to some inspirational women who have made significant change in the UK over recent years, such as Professor Sarah Gilbert, the woman behind the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine and founder of the #FreePeriods campaign, Amika George, who’s goal was to get the government to provide free sanitary products to school children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The assembly also encouraged students to champion women in their every day lives and consider future opportunities to stand-up for women’s rights.

      On Monday 6th March Miss Cook ran a House Competition after school in B9 where students designed campaigns for gender equality.

       

      In tutor time on Wednesday 8th March students were given the opportunity to write a thank-you/kindness postcards to significant women in their lives. Sixth form students also completed pledge cards to share their commitment to embracing equity. Also on Wednesday 8th March, CHSG staff made pledge’s to show their support for International Women’s day, focusing on the theme of #EmbraceEquity. Additionally, during lesson time, subject teachers introduced students to important women in their fields of study.

       

      On Tuesday 21st March (Personal Development Day 3) students in years 7-11 will receive a lesson focusing on the UN International Women’s Day campaign: “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. This lesson will explore the persistent gender gap in digital technology and women’s underrepresentation in STEM education and careers. Encouraging students to explore ways that we can

      1. Close all gaps in digital access and skills
      2. Support women and girls in STEM
      3. Create tech that meets the needs of women and girls
      4. Address technology-facilitated gender-based violence

       

      Students have thorough enjoyed celebrating International Women’s Day this year. It is important event in our school calendar.

    • OFSTED Report

      As you will be aware we were visited by OFSTED on 24 and 25 January 2023. It now gives me great pleasure to share the final report and the outcomes of this inspection with you (I have to admit it has been incredibly difficult for me keep this fantastic news under wraps for the past month!) Due to our excellent outcomes last year we were inspected under a Section 8 inspection meaning that inspectors are evaluating whether the school remains good, with no change in the overall grading. Had there been any concerns over provision or results we would have been inspected under a Section 5 inspection. I am delighted to inform you that we remain ‘Good’, with so much of our work being identified by the inspectors as being outstanding!    

      Before we go any further I would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank everyone who has been involved in this inspection. My fantastic and supportive staff, our wonderful students and the wider #teamchsg who make our school a great place every day, not just during these 2 days. I want to thank the parents and carers who support us endlessly by ensuring their child meets our expectations and, like us, believe in the power of a great education. There were so many positive emails from parents and carers and I thank you all for taking the time to do so. I can assure you, we didn’t ‘pull out any stops’ or do anything differently to what we normally do on a daily basis, which makes this report even more pleasing for everyone in #teamchsg.

      Now to the report! Throughout the 2 days inspectors were incredibly positive about the school (especially the staff and students) and the learning environment we have created. In this report they have acknowledged the hard work and commitment of my staff and have more importantly ratified many of the decisions we have made as leaders since the last inspection. They understood our mission and praised our high expectations of our students. They could see what our priorities were and how much progress we have made in the past 3 years, despite the pandemic. Student feedback was incredibly positive in the survey. As the Lead Inspector put it “this is clearly a great school, on its way to being an excellent school”.

      I could fill this email with positive quotes, but a few select ones that bring me great pride include: 

      “Carshalton High School for Girls is a calm, welcoming school. Pupils are happy and feel safe. Leaders have developed a culture where pupils behave well and work hard. Adults in the school know pupils well and support them to achieve.”    

      “Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This is realised in the curriculum offered and the wider opportunities that leaders provide.”

      “The curriculum is taught well, and low-level disruption to learning is rare. The positive learning environment helps pupils to achieve well. Pupils are kind to one another, and their interactions are warm.”

      “Pupils behave well around the school. Relationships between staff and pupils, and between pupils themselves, are positive. Pupils are confident in reporting bullying and say that staff tackle it effectively.”

      Despite this fantastic report I can assure you that we will not rest on our laurels, and we will continue with our mission of being ‘a centre that is fearless in its commitment to excellence’. If anything we are now even more motived to take our school towards “Outstanding” in the near future, and keep improving as we have done. However, the outcomes of our students will always remain my greatest motivator, not an inspection grading. 

      You will no doubt see that despite it being a Section 8 inspection it was a very thorough process and certainly the most thorough I have been involved in (this was my 5th inspection – first as Head!). However, through this level of challenge I believe the inspectors really got a flavour of who we are as a school and the excellent provision that we offer. I will leave you with the final quote that matters the most to me – “pupils enjoy their learning and value the time and support teachers give them. They appreciate teachers recognising their efforts”.  I cannot ask for any more than that!

    • Industrial Action by the National Education Union (NEU) – arrangements for Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March 202

      Dear Parents / Carers,

       

      Re: Industrial Action by the National Education Union (NEU) – arrangements for Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March 2023

       

      Following on from the letter sent earlier in the year by the Girls Learning Trust regarding industrial action, you will be aware that the National Education Union (NEU) has announced some proposed strike days for our area, with the next strikes due to take place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March 2023

       

      Although the Trust has been formally notified by trade union of their intention to strike, there is also the possibility that through ongoing negotiations the strikes may not take place. As before, teachers are not compelled to inform their Headteacher of their plans to strike and staff not striking are not allowed to cover colleagues who are on strike. Therefore, for the purpose of the strike day lessons are suspended and there will be no remote learning. 

       

      Schools locally will have varying numbers of NEU members; therefore, the impact of the potential strike will differ from school to school.  

       

      Arrangements for Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March 2023

      Following a risk assessment considering the safety of staff and students, our aim is to provide the following arrangements for these proposed strike days. The school will remain open to all staff not involved in industrial action. 

       

      Years 11 and 13

      School will remain open as usual to students in Year 11 and 13 only who will attend their timetabled lessons where staff are not taking industrial action. Other lessons will be supervised by members of the Leadership Team and cover supervisors. Students need to arrive by 8.25am as normal in correct uniform.

       

      Year 12

      Exams for Year 12 students will go ahead and students in this year group should attend school for their exams only. If they are not sitting an exam they should remain at home and use the time for revision. Exams will take place in the Careers Centre. Please note students should make their way directly to the Careers Centre upon arrival and not to the Sixth Form block.

       

      Years 7, 8, 9 and 10

      All students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are to remain at home. Students in these year groups should carry on with the next timetabled lesson in their booklets, and complete Maths work on either Sparx Maths or Hegarty Maths. 

       

      Critical Workers - The school will also be open to those students whose parents/carers are critical workers.  If you believe your child should be given a place under the critical worker criteria as outlined on page 22 of this document: Emergency planning and response for education, childcare, and children’s social care settings October 2022 (publishing.service.gov.uk)  please contact the School Office by 3pm on Monday 13th March. 

       

      Additionally, the school will contact families whose children may particularly benefit from studying in a routine, supervised and familiar environment.

       

      There will be a food service available in the canteen at break and lunchtimes for students and staff. 

       

      Please note that Friday 17th March will remain an INSET day and will, therefore, be closed to students.

       

      As always, we will keep parents informed if any of these arrangements change. Details about any future strike days will be sent out as required.
