Carshalton Girls is committed to supporting students with medical conditions so that they can attend school safely and fully participate in all aspects of school life, including practical lessons, educational visits, extracurricular activities and physical education.

When a student joins the school, parents and carers are asked to provide details of any medical condition that may affect them during the school day or while taking part in school trips and visits. This information will be followed up by a member of our Main Office First Aid Team, who will contact parents to gather further information and discuss any support that may be required.

Our aim is to ensure that students’ medical needs are met while maximising attendance and engagement.

If a student requires medication to be stored and administered at school, parents should complete the medication form (link below) and bring it with the medication to the Main Office. This applies to both long-term medical conditions, short-term illnesses and pain relief.

Emergency Medication

The school holds emergency medication for asthma and severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). With parental consent, trained staff may administer this medication in an emergency or when a student has forgotten to bring their prescribed medication to school.

Allergies

All students with a diagnosed allergy will have an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP), which includes an Allergy Action Plan. These plans are shared with relevant staff to ensure that students receive appropriate support.

A member of the Main Office First Aid Team will work in partnership with parents and carers to develop the plan, ensuring that we understand:

• The nature and severity of the allergy
• Known triggers
• Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction
• Appropriate treatment and emergency procedures

This helps us provide a safe environment and respond effectively should a reaction occur.

First Aid

We have a team of staff trained in First Aid who are available to support students in the event of an accident, injury or illness during the school day.

Our First Aiders will assess each situation and use their professional judgement to determine whether further medical attention may be required. This may include advising parents to seek medical advice from a GP, to attend A&E, or, in more serious situations, calling 999 for emergency assistance.

Whenever a student receives first aid treatment, parents and carers will be informed by email or telephone, as appropriate.
