Free School Meals

Free school meals

Free school meals can be applied for if your child attends any state-funded school, and you meet the eligibility criteria. The government pays schools an amount each year, as pupil premium, for a student registered as entitled to free school meals. This money can benefit students with, for example, funding new equipment, contribution towards a school trip or maybe new teaching staff.

Your child may be eligible for free school meals if a parent receives any of the following:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit, or have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit - if working, your net household income must be less than £7,400 a year (not including any benefits you get)
