French Year 9
What is studied on the course?
With the introduction of Key Stage 4 into Year 9, Students continue to build upon their knowledge learnt in Year 7 and 8. The Faculty follows the Secondary Strategy’s MFL Framework, which promotes confidence in all students through an ownership of learning skills. Students will use a variety of resources and will be provided with an exercise book.
Students begin the GCSE examination course in Year 9, following the AQA GCSE French Specification. The main themes are as follows:
Theme 1: Identity and culture
Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest
Theme 3: Current and future study and employment
Students read and listen to French in a wide range of contexts, including the vocational and the topical. They develop their ability to talk and write about themselves, and learn to take part in role-plays in real life situations they will encounter when they visit a French-speaking country.
Students are taught in mixed ability groups.
Class size is usually between 15 to 25 students.
Lessons are interactive and tailored according to the groups needs. Language skills are practised using a variety of activities: listening to native speakers, CDs, DVD’s, ICT, games, songs, projects and reading.
This reinforces class work. It is important to recognize that preparation for a speaking task or learning for a vocabulary test is given as much time as a writing or reading homework.
There are normally assessments in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms, covering all four language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
How parents/carers can help
It is really not necessary to know any French at all. Please test your daughter on vocabulary, encourage her to speak any French words or speaking presentations aloud to you or allow your child to teach you or a younger member of the family a few phrases. Look through and discuss topics/ comments in your child’s exercise book. Research the following websites for suitable exercises:
We take part in The Routes into Languages Foreign Language Translation Bee, which is a competition for students to build on the work students did in Year 7 with the Routes into Languages National Spelling Bee practising and improving their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French, German or Spanish). It meets the demand from pupils and their teachers for a project providing a sense of progression by building on the requirements of the new curriculum, with its emphasis on translation and grammatical manipulation etc, helping students to practise and improve a range of skills vital to preparation for starting a GCSE course: vocabulary, pronunciation, memory, verb conjugation, tenses and sentence formation.
