Attendance and Punctuality

It is crucial that attendance and punctuality reflect the commitment that students are prepared to show in school. The aim of this policy is to treat students with the same autonomy as they would have in the world of work, but also with the same responsibilities. Sixth Form students who fail to attend 95% of their lessons, without clear justification or certification, may therefore have to pay for their own examination entries.

Please note that students receiving Bursary funding will be closely monitored each month. If attendance falls below 95% attendance, funding may be stopped until it improves.

Any unauthorised absence will feature on any reference written by the school.

Authorised Absence

Absences will be authorised in the following circumstances and, where possible, should always be accompanied by a note in advance:

  • illness, when supported by a phone call on the same day or a letter the first day back after absence. Please be advised that medical evidence will be requested if absence persists.
  • religious observance
  • 3 open day visits in liaison with subject staff and Miss Bevan
  • 2 Taster Day visits to university in liaison with subject staff and Miss Bevan
Unauthorised Absence

Absences will not be authorised in the following circumstances:

  • time required for part-time job
  • driving lessons
  • routine medical/dental check-ups
Signing In and Out

Sixth Form students are given greater freedom with regard to their study periods and are permitted to leave the school site during the school day.

All students wishing to make the most of their opportunity to leave the site must ensure they:

  • have their own gate pass
  • always sign out on leaving and then sign back in on their return.

Failure to follow these expectations may result in the removal of a student’s privilege to leave the site. It is absolutely essential that students ensure they register correctly in case of emergency.

Holidays or Leave of Absence

As with students lower down the school, it is expected that you will not take time off from school for a holiday. However, should there be an unavoidable reason as to why you have to go away during the school term, a ‘Leave of Absence’ form should be collected from the school office and handed in to Miss Bevan or Mrs Davis at least one term in advance.

Failure to attend this detention will result in an automatic placement in SLT.
Level 1 Attendance and Punctuality Intervention Support Plan:

The student will have a meeting with their tutor to discuss reasons for lateness and/or absence and a letter will be sent home to notify parents of the meeting and actions to follow on. The student will be put on a Sixth Form attendance and punctuality Tracker.
