AQA Applied Science
What is the course about?
Applied Science is an opportunity for students to focus on the vocation aspects of Science. As well as being ideal for students seeking a broad background in Science, it also suits those entering this vocational area for the first time.
Students will enjoy will be able to focus on understanding science based on real world phenomena and choose particular topics of interest and study these in-depth.
A Level Applied Science is a good choice for students considering higher education in any Science-based course, including: Biochemical Sciences, Chemistry, Food Technology, Human Physiology, Nursing, Sports Science, Materials Science, and Medical Physics.
There is an emphasis on written communication and students will plan, work and think independently through portfolio work.
What sort of work will I be doing?
There are a range of Units that will be completed over the two year course, a sample of what we will offer is:
Unit 1: Investigating Science at Work
Unit 2: Energy transfer systems
Unit 3: Finding out about substances
Unit 8: Medical physics
Unit 11: Controlling chemical processes
Unit 14: The healthy body
How will I be assessed?
Exam board- AQA Applied Science Level 3 Extended Certificate
50% internally assessed through portfolio work.
50% externally assessed through exams.
What qualifications will I need to take the course?
At least a Grade 5 in GSCE Science will be required to take A Level Applied Science. At least a 5 in Maths and English is also recommended. Students will need to be able to communicate effectively and research information from a variety of sources and also be able to handle and interpret data.
