What could be more exciting than spending a day seeing what adults really do all day? It’s not only fun, it’s educational, interactive and inspiring, and introduces the concept of work at an early and impressionable age.

Some students who were unable to secure a placement in the workplace took part in activities in school to development their understanding of the world of work. During an English lesson students unpacked boxes, counted stock, completed delivery paperwork, stored stock (making sensible choices about health and safety issues) and thought about
how to recycle packaging. They used numeracy skills to work out shortfalls in delivery and literacy to read labels. They also re-organised stock cupboards with helpful labelling.

In the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), they organised returned books and filed them on shelves. They were very interested in what was going to happen about the parts of the delivery order that were wrong and how the incorrect delivery would be resolved with the supplier.

Sara, 8SA, who is an LRC Assistant led a group of students in the tasks they were assigned. At the end of the lesson she was given 20 House Achievement Points to divide between the workers depending on how committed they were to their jobs and could recommend any high achievers for a bonus!
