Round up of Summer 2016

Welcome to our summer bumper edition!
Welcome to our summer bumper edition!

What a fantastic term it has been , indeed, what a fantastic year! There has been such a buzz around the school with so much going on and a sense of anticipation and excitement with all the building work taking place.

The examination season went extremely well and all year groups involved conducted themselves brilliantly. We are keeping everything crossed that our predictions will be realised to give another year of truly outstanding results, with school records broken.

Outside of the classroom there has been so much success too and this edition is full of the activities that girls have taken part in and where they have excelled. Congratulations to all students who have been involved and a huge thank to the staff who have given up so much time to make these opportunities possible.
Goodbye to Staff
As is always the case at this time of year, we say goodbye to staff.

Mrs Khan, teacher of Science is retiring after 24 fantastic years of service to the school. She has taught thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to very successful careers in the varied fields of Science. Mrs Khan has been a truly loyal and committed member of staff and we thank her for everything she has done.  We wish her a very long and happy retirement.

We also say goodbye to Mrs Capisani, Deputy Director of English. Mrs Capisani returned from maternity leave just before Easter but has decided to leave us to spend time with her twin boys. Mrs Capisani has been at the school for 10 years, she is an outstanding teacher who has been a real asset to the English department. We thank Mrs Capisani for everything she has done over the years and wish her and her family all the very best for the future.

Miss Wheeler, Director of Maths, leaves us as she is relocating to Sussex. Miss Wheeler has worked very closely with the Co-Director, Mrs Foley, to continue to successfully move the Maths department forward and secure excellent results. Miss Wheeler is a very enthusiastic and conscientious member of staff. We thank her for her very significant contribution and wish her well in the future.

Mr Harrison, teacher of English has been at the school for 6 years. Mr Harrison has been a fantastic teacher during that time, inspiring many students and securing excellent results for so many. Mr Harrison has decided to take a break from teaching and is going travelling, visiting parts of the world he has always wanted to see. We thank Mr Harrison for everything he has contributed to the school and hope he has a wonderful time as he embarks on his adventure.
Miss Audley, teacher of Sociology has gained promotion to the post of Head of Sociology at a school in a neighbouring London borough. Miss Audley undertook the role of Head of Sociology during the maternity leave of Mrs Durrett and having done such a good job it was only a matter of time before Miss Audley was successful in gaining a job to run her own department. We thank Miss Audley for all her hard work and wish her all the  best in her new post.

Two members of staff leave us linked to teaching training. Miss Hopwood started with us as a Cover Supervisor.  She has been training this year to complete her Qualified Teacher Status and we have been delighted to provide the opportunity for her to do this. As a new teacher she now moves on to take up a post at a local school.  We thank Miss Hopwood for all her work and wish her well in her teaching career.

Mrs Wheeler who works within our Learning Support Department leaves us to begin primary school teacher training. Mrs Wheeler has developed excellent relationships with many of our students and her work around Literacy and Speech and Language has been invaluable. Mrs Wheeler will be a superb teacher and we wish all the very best in the future.

We will also be saying goodbye to other staff who have been on short-term contracts, Mr Gustaw in Physics who is returning to Canada, Mr Barnor who has covered Mrs Longman’s maternity leave in Geography, Miss Arulappa who has been covering for Mrs Lane during the period of her maternity leave and Miss Coogans in Science.  We say a huge thank you to all these staff and wish them well in the future.

We also say goodbye to three members of support staff. Miss Marreh has been with us as an apprentice this year working between Food Technology as a technician and as a Learning Support Assistant.  We wish her well in her future career. Mrs Cheema in Finance has been on a short-term contract covering for another member of staff. We thank her and wish her well.

And finally, we say goodbye to Mrs Strong, my Personal Assistant, who is retiring. Mrs Strong has been at the school for 10 years, having started with us as receptionist and then gained the position of Headteacher’s PA.  Mrs Strong has been totally committed and has worked tirelessly to have everything organised for members of the Senior Leadership Team, the governing body and myself.  She has been such a valuable asset for me personally. I thank her and wish her a wonderful retirement.
Buildings Update
The new building (J block) will be ours by the end of term, enabling us to move in during the assigned days from the 18th to 20th July. The re-modelling of the current 6th Form block and Expressive Arts will be completed during the summer as will the re-modelling of the upstairs of D block and the roof of F block. Demolition of the mobile huts and current dining room will also be done during the summer as well as completion of the new Multi-Games area and levelling of the new sports field.

So much to do, but it is very, very exciting. The site will barely be recognisable when we return in September!
Energy Drinks
I wrote to you recently regarding the fact that we are banning energy drinks. The ban has been introduced from this term but will continue next year. We have done this following the growing amount of evidence of the damage these drinks can do with their extremely high sugar content and high proportion of caffeine and other chemicals within the drinks. Your support with this new policy is invaluable. We have spoken to the students to raise their awareness and we would appreciate you speaking to your daughter and discussing this with her.
Uniform Policy
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that there will be new policy regarding uniform from September. The difference in the policy will be with regards to the sanctions and action that will be taken should students attend school out of uniform. Full information will go out in September.
And finally...

School starts back on Tuesday 6th September:

Years 7, 12 & 13 register at 8.35 am

Years 8-11 register at 11.00am

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support and wish you a wonderful summer break.

Mrs V Jones
