Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Curriculum Structure

The Key Stage 3 offer is broad with 16 individual subjects including discrete, timetabled lessons in Citizenship, Dance, and Drama. All students study a core offer of English, Maths, Science and MFL with all students studying History and Geography until the end of Year 9 where they will choose at least one to carry forward onto GCSE.  The study of STEM, Computer Science, Art, Religious Studies, Citizenship and Music continues into Year 9.

The focus at Key Stage 3 is on mastery of knowledge, understanding and skills within a wide range of subjects. Students are taught in mixed ability groups other than in Maths and Science (Year 8 & Year 9) where some students will access additional support through smaller group teaching. There is generous time allocation and class sizes in EBacc subjects to guarantee a greater depth of learning.

Key Stage 3 is not simply preparation for Key Stage 4. The curriculum in Key Stage 3 places importance on the delivery of rich and powerful knowledge and ensures students are equipped with the depth of language they need to make exceptional progress. We meet, and in places exceed, the requirements of the National Curriculum.

The curriculum in Year 9 is designed to provide continuity, balance, and breadth, but at the same time enable students to specialise in a small number of Key Stage 4 courses. This study allows students to experience subjects in greater depth as well as meeting their needs, aptitudes and career intentions.

We have a two-week timetable comprising 50 x 55 minute lessons. The table below shows the number of lessons per fortnight for each subject.
