Geography Year 10

Geography prepares for the world of work - geographers, with their skills of analysis are highly employable!"                      - Michael Palin (previous President of the Royal Geographical Society)

At Carshalton High School for Girls we study AQA GCSE Geography. The course explores a wide variety of themes that include physical, human and environmental aspects of the world around us. Students are encouraged to learn about processes and the links between cause and effect. These skills not only help our students develop in this subject area but also that of other subject areas. Geography has much scope for cross-curricular opportunities in learning.

Study of this course will give students of all backgrounds the opportunity to develop: communication skills, graphical and cartographical skills, technological skills, including ICT and GIS, interpersonal skills through debate and discussion, literacy and numeracy skills, problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial skills and awareness of career possibilities.

In Year 10 students study:

The Living World

Students have a look at ecosystems that exist at a range of scales and then they focus on tropical rainforests and cold environments as contrasting ecosystems.

Urban issues and challenges
This topic takes a close look at urban areas of the world and the challenges and opportunities they create.  We examine urban change, the importance of sustainability and the global variations in economic development and quality of life.

Students will take part in two data collection fieldtrips in order to prepare them for their Paper 3 in the summer examinations.

Students study a number of case studies to illustrate the real life application of the theory.  Geography is a current and topical subject!
The urban environment

The world is becoming increasing urban. In 2008 the proportion of people living in urban areas rose to over 50%. Urban change brings both challenges and opportunities. The global future will be increasingly urban and that will call for sustainable management.  We investigate all these issues and look at various urban areas around the world to provide case studies.
