Drama

“I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged”
Peter Brook   The Deadly Theatre :The Empty Space 1968

The Drama Department aims to provide students with a practical understanding of the craft of drama, to develop students’ critical awareness, to enable students to understand the social context of their work and to extend the students’ engagement with drama as an expression of culture. Drama is taught in mixed ability groups and available as an option at GCSE and A Level.

We provide opportunities to explore a wide range of complex and challenging issues through the medium of performance and aim to promote a lifelong interest in the performing arts.

Drama 4Through the practice of drama, students develop a range of personal life skills including problem-solving, self-expression, confidence, and succinct communication of ideas. We teach a wealth and depth of performance skills to enable students to develop engaging theatrical performances with creative, individual flair. We encourage students to work in a sensitive and supportive manner as a member of a team whilst developing an independent portfolio of skills including technical and design elements.

The department is proud to be involved in presenting a whole-school musical production each year.  Students from all years across the school are invited to audition for a part in the production and those with a more technical interest are trained in sound or lighting production. Students are also encouraged to take part as stage management, or to undertake a creative role with set, costume, and stage design. The production is inclusive; anyone who is willing to be committed to the months of rehearsal is given the opportunity to be involved. Previous productions include Bugsy Malone (2013), Wiz (2014),  Grease (2015) and Beauty and the Beast (2016). We also produce a pantomime at Christmas devised by students in Years 7 and 8.

The department organises a range of theatrical trips and visiting tours, and encourages students to participate in activities beyond the classroom walls. Trips have been organised to see 'War Horse', 'Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time', 'The Lion King' and 'Wicked'.
