Dance in the Sixth Form
BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts
“Dance is vital, an activity both exhilarating and liberating to watch or do. The instinct to dance is fundamentally joyous and no matter how hard you try you can’t get away from that for long. It can also be a huge force for good, effectively drawing people together and levelling everyone through sheer hard work. It can speed up your heart rate, it can enliven your being, it can change your life.”
Richard Alston CBE, (Choreographer)
BTEC Dance is a two year specialist qualification focusing on developing key knowledge and practical skills required in the Dance employment sector. Technique classes are predominately contemporary dance based with workshops exploring other dance genres. Students appreciate and analyse their own work as well as those by professional companies. Choreography and performance are also key aspects. Students that show potential maybe considered for entry into the AS/A2 Level Dance qualification in addition to the BTEC.
BTEC Dance is assessed continuously throughout the course. Students will be expected to collate a portfolio of evidence based on each Unit they complete. Practical assessments will focus on choreography and performance. Attending extra dance classes will help to improve technique and develop movement vocabulary. Attending performances by professional dance companies will aid critical thinking and choreography.
“Dance requires dedication and with the right attitude every student has the ability to express themselves creatively.” (student)
“Exploring new ideas is essential and imagination is the key to success!” (student)
