Attendance and Punctuality

It is crucial that attendance and punctuality reflect the commitment that students are prepared to show in school. The aim of this policy is to treat students with the same autonomy as they would have in the world of work, but also with the same responsibilities. Sixth Form students who fail to attend 95% of their lessons, without clear justification or certification, may therefore have to pay for their own examination entries.

Please note that students receiving Bursary funding will be closely monitored each month. If attendance falls below 95% attendance, funding may be stopped until it improves.

Any unauthorised absence will feature on any reference written by the school.

Authorised Absence

Absences will be authorised in the following circumstances and, where possible, should always be accompanied by a note in advance:

  • illness, when supported by a phone call on the same day or a letter the first day back after absence. Please be advised that medical evidence will be requested if absence persists.
  • religious observance
  • 3 open day visits in liaison with subject staff and Miss Bevan
  • 2 Taster Day visits to university in liaison with subject staff and Miss Bevan
Unauthorised Absence

Absences will not be authorised in the following circumstances:

  • time required for part-time job
  • driving lessons
  • routine medical/dental check-ups
Signing In and Out

Sixth Form students are given greater freedom with regard to their study periods and are permitted to leave the school site during the school day.

All students wishing to make the most of their opportunity to leave the site must ensure they:

  • have their own gate pass
  • always sign out on leaving and then sign back in on their return.

Failure to follow these expectations may result in the removal of a student’s privilege to leave the site. It is absolutely essential that students ensure they register correctly in case of emergency.

Holidays or Leave of Absence

As with students lower down the school, it is expected that you will not take time off from school for a holiday. However, should there be an unavoidable reason as to why you have to go away during the school term, a ‘Leave of Absence’ form should be collected from the school office and handed in to Miss Bevan or Mrs Davis at least one term in advance.

Morning Registration
Year 12 and Year 13

Registration every morning is at 8:30am in tutor rooms.

Afternoon Registration
Year 12 and Year 13

If students do not have a lesson 5 they may leave after they have registered with Mrs Willard in A29. The earliest students can register with Mrs Willard is at 12.45pm.

Please refer to our attendance and punctuality policy below

Attendance and Punctuality Framework

-Students will automatically be placed on an attendance and punctuality tracker from Levels 1 – 4 (Level 4 being the most serious stage)

-If a student is late to form time and comes in after 8.30am on any occasion during the school week, she/he will be kept back on a Friday afternoon for 30 minutes for each incidence of lateness.

Level 1 Attendance and Punctuality Intervention Support Plan:

-Monitored by their tutor for a 2 week cycle.

The student will have a meeting with their tutor to discuss reasons for lateness and/or absence and a letter will be sent home to notify parents of the meeting and actions to follow on. The student will be put on a Sixth Form attendance and punctuality Tracker.

The student will be booked in for a detention with their Head of Year. This will run every Friday in the Sixth Form Work Room. They will be expected to collect work to complete during this hour.

Level 2 Attendance and Punctuality Intervention Support Plan:

-Monitored by their tutor for a 2 week cycle.

*Bursary Funding will be stopped.

If there is no improvement seen whilst the student is on the Level 1 intervention then they will enter Level 2. A student may also enter Level 2 if their attendance falls below 95%. The student will have a meeting with their form tutor and Head of Year to discuss reasons for absence. A letter will be sent home to support meeting and actions to follow on. The student will continue on attendance and punctuality tracker. Students will lose the privilege of being able to leave the site unless their lessons have finished for the day and their Year leader has given permission.

Level 3 Attendance and Punctuality Intervention Support Plan:

-Monitored by their Year Leader.

*Bursary Funding will be stopped.

If there is no improvement seen whilst the student is on Level 2 intervention then they will enter Level 3. A student will also enter Level 3 if their unauthorised attendance falls below 85%. The student will have a formal meeting with their Year Leader and parents. The student will continue on an attendance and punctuality tracker. Students will lose the privilege of being able to leave the site and their day will commence at 8:35am and end at 3:00pm, unless they are timetabled to be in a period 6.

Level 4: Attendance and Punctuality Intervention Support Plan

-Monitored by Head of Sixth Form.

* Bursary Funding will be stopped.

Students who are unsuccessful on Level 3 Intervention Support may be asked to consider whether Sixth Form is the right option for their progression. A formal parental meeting will take place with the Head of Sixth Form to consider their child’s further options.
