Attendance and Behaviour

Students are trusted and supported to manage their own schedule in meeting deadlines and taking responsibility for their work. They learn to balance academic tasks with their extra-curricular commitments and personal life. We have high expectations of all of our students and our attendance policy and behavioural framework reflect this.

Attendance and Punctuality

If attendance and punctuality should not be of a satisfactory level we shall question why and appropriate steps will then be taken.

Authorised Absence

Absences will be authorised in the following circumstances and, where possible, should always be accompanied by a note in advance:

  • Illness, when supported by a phone call on the same day or a letter the first day back after absence. Please be advised that medical evidence will be requested if absence persists
  • Religious observance
Unauthorised Absence

Absences will not be authorised to take absences in a number of circumstances which shall include but not be limited to the following:

  • Time required for part-time job
  • Driving lessons
  • Routine medical/dental check-ups
Signing in and out

Sixth Form students are given greater freedom with regard to their study periods and are permitted to leave the school site during the school day.

Any student wishing to leave the site must ensure they:

  • have their own gate pass (available from Mrs Alexander); and
  • always sign out on leaving and then sign back in when returning
Holidays or Leave of Absence

As with students in lower years, it is expected that Sixth Formers will not take time off from school for a holiday. However, should there be an unavoidable reason as to why leave must be taken, a ‘Leave of Absence’ form can be downloaded from this website and handed to the Head of Sixth Form at least one term in advance.

Attendance Sanctions

The pastoral team and the attendance officer will monitor attendance and where necessary the following sanctions will apply:

100 - 95%
No sanction needed, although tutors may discuss attendance with the individual.
90 - 94.9%
Tutors to follow guidance of attendance interviews. This may include contact home.
85 – 89.9%
Contact will be made home by tutors and students will be set formal targets with a review date.
80 – 84.9%
Attendance will be reviewed by Head or Deputy Head of Sixth Form.
Below 80%
Attendance will be reviewed by Head of Sixth Form or SLT. Students may be asked to leave.

Please note that a student falling into any of the above categories may be involved in an Attendance Panel interview.
