Attendance & Punctuality

Attendance

The school places huge importance on ensuring students attend regularly and arrive on time. There is clear evidence from research that poor levels of attendance have a negative impact on student achievement.

Except through illness, no student should be absent from school without the permission of the Headteacher in advance. Under the DCSF regulations, a maximum of ten school days absence is allowed for children in extenuating circumstances, but only with the prior approval of the school. A Leave of Absence request form must be completed and handed to the student’s Year Leader. It is stressed that such absence is undesirable, because it may severely disrupt the student’s programme of learning and assessment.

Parents are requested to notify the school of any absence on the first day and to send a note of explanation to the Form Tutor on the student’s return. The school will then decide whether the absence is authorised or not. Students must copy up any work they have missed. In the event of possible long illness work will, where appropriate, be set for the student to complete at home.

There is a policy of ‘first day calling’ where parents do not notify an absence, with parents being contacted by phone or text that their daughter is absent. Text messaging is also used to inform parents of key events, dates or important information.

Punctuality

Students are expected to arrive at registration and lessons on time. The bell marks the beginning of a session and there are 5 minute warning bells to inform students they should move to registration in the morning, at the end of lunchtime and at the end of break.

Students who arrive late should report to the Late Room and complete the Late Book.  Failure to do so will result in their being marked absent.  Detentions will be issued for late arrival to school:

1 late arrival in a week detention with Tutor
2 late arrivals in a week detention with Year Leader
3 late arrivals in a week detention with Senior Leader

The school regularly rewards students for good attendance and punctuality.
