Youth Philanthropy Initiative - Year 9

This year, Year 9 Citizenship students were given a project to raise funds and awareness for a charity of their choice.

We had to visit and contact our charities to understand more about them and collect leaflets and merchandise.  Our charity was Shooting Star CHASE. To raise money and awareness we decided that the main thing we would do is fundraise in Sutton High Street on two consecutive weekends. This not only raised a lot of money but also awareness as a lot of people were asking us more about the charity and what it does. With lots of help we managed to raise £750.

First there was a class final in which each group were required to present in front of their Citizenship class and talk about their charity and what they did, the teacher would then choose one or two groups who would go on to the school final. There was a lot of close competition and everyone in year nine did so well. Luckily we made it into the school final!

At the school final there were three judges from YPI, alongside them was Miss Fitzgerald and Mrs Jones. All groups did amazingly well but we won! This meant that our charity would get £3000 along with the additional money we raised. As for our prize we were invited to go to a gala evening in London.

For the gala we travelled up to London with Ms Lagess. When we arrived there was a big cheque at our table and we had to go and have our picture taken with it. As the night went on there were many different speakers including philanthropists and inspirational speakers such as a woman who had lost all four limbs because of meningitis. We saw entertainment acts like All The Kings Men, a dance group called Trilogy and many more including Loveable Rogues! Overall it was a fantastic night and we are really grateful and pleased we got the opportunity to take part in this whole project.
