eSafety & Social Networking
Recently we have received a few concerns from parents about the inappropriate nature of some students’ status comments and pictures on Facebook. Subsequently those students have logged into their accounts and shown us the nature of what is being launched.
I have to say I have been totally shocked at some of the comments, foul language and the number of photos launched where students are pictured in school uniform. Some photos have also been taken in school – which is against school policy.
Hence I write to let you know what I have asked all students to do:
-
Remove any photos they might have placed on Facebook, or other social media, with their school uniform within two weeks
-
Advised them that if they are friends with people that do use foul language and say inappropriate things they should terminate their Facebook, BBM or similar contact with them
-
Advised them if we do get to know of any photos launched that have been taken in school appropriate sanction will be taken
-
Advised them that they should not advertise what school they go to for e-Safety purposes
-
Review their privacy settings to ensure that only their ‘friends’ can access their site
-
I have also asked them to discuss with their parent/carer what is on their social networking site
I would strongly advise that you regularly check your daughter’s social network site or mobile phone messages and pictures to ensure that the images/messages she is sending and receiving are appropriate and acceptable.
The use of social networking and messaging is increasingly becoming an area school is having to deal with. I would therefore ask for your support in monitoring your daughter’s behaviour in relation to this area.
If you do have any issues, concerns or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone or email at nrahman1@suttonmail.org.
