MFL Spelling Bee Competition

Hi! I am Bhargavi from 7HM.  I recently participated in the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Spelling Bee and I am going to share my experiences.

I was accompanied to the school where the competition was held by Miss Abdou and my three friends, Melanie,  who was participating in German Spelling Bee, and Ayusha and Halah who were participating in the French Spelling Bee.  We arrives early so we waited outside and practiced.  Then the competition began after an assembly.

I tried my best to spell as many words as I could.  Then the ‘Sudden Death’ round began, for which I wasn’t called.  I was disappointed and thought I had lost, when the judge called my name, I wondered why, and everybody started clapping, and then I realized that I was going to the Nationals directly!  I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world at that moment.  But the best was yet to come.  From our school, three of us who participated, made it successfully to the National round. Melanie came third in German and Halah came fourth in French.  Sadly, one of them didn’t make it but as I say, she won too, she just isn’t going any further because she is already excellent at it.

After a short break for refreshments, we were called in the hall for a final assembly, where they would decide who was 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th amongst the selected students in the competition to award us suitably.  We had to spell loudly, with a microphone. This time, I spelt my best ever, and I won the first prize, and the trophy for our school! This was even better than before!  I was so proud of myself, and I am sure others were too.  The five things that helped me win were:

  • Faith
  • Confidence
  • Preparation
  • Encouragement
  • Determination
I felt so happy that I had made my school, my teachers, my friends, and my family proud of me.  I am very thankful to my teachers, the Year 8 Language Mentors, Michelle, Ingrid, Brooke, Izzy and Millie for practicing with us,the school for teaching me a new language and my friends, teachers, and family for supporting me and encouraging me.

It was fun and I am really looking forward to participating, and hopefully winning, the National Spelling Bee in Cambridge to make Carshalton High School for Girls proud.
