The English Faculty - Key Stage 4
English at Key Stage 4
Pupils at Key Stage 4 embark on two GCSEs; English and English Literature. At Carshalton High School for Girls, we teach the AQA Specification A syllabus.
English GCSE
Year 10
Once a fortnight, the pupils build a specific folder for their English GCSE studying how to analyse non-fiction texts as well as learning to write for a specific purposes and audiences. The purposes of writing to argue, persuade and advise as well as to inform, explain and describe are taught during this year in innovative, interactive and dynamic ways. The mandatory coursework (see below) is completed this year.
Speaking and Listening coursework is completed in lesson times through individual, pair, group and class discussions, debates and role plays.
Year 11
The skills learnt in Year 10 are consolidated and enhanced with schemes of work that explore a variety of text types in a differentiated way. Pupils have by Year 11 created detailed folders from which to develop their skills as both critical readers and sophisticated writers. Poetry from different cultures and traditions is also taught to the pupils in preparation for their final exams in this subject. These poems deal with issues surrounding cultural identity and provide stimulating and thought provoking lessons for the students.
English Literature GCSE
Year 10
Pupils complete their five pieces of mandatory coursework this year. Schemes of work are devised around facilitating individual potential regarding a significant written response to specific texts. Pupils gain an understanding of how meaning is conveyed in a variety of text types including:
- Pre 1914 Drama (Shakespeare) (English and Literature)
- Post 1914 Drama (Literature)
- Pre 1914 Prose (English and Literature)
- Media (English)
- Original Writing (English)
Year 11
Pupils study a modern novel and pre and post 1914 poetry this year in preparation for the exams at the end of the course. Applying their understanding and appreciation of layers of meaning in texts and the ability to convey these ideas in a structured way, Year 11 students discuss a novel and an anthology of poetry in great detail. Lessons are structured to cultivate their independent perspective supported by textual evidence. Pupils are supported and encouraged to fulfil their potential through differentiated, interactive and challenging lessons.
KS4 Reading Lesson
Once a fortnight, throughout the two years, there is a silent reading lesson which is guided towards different text types. Students are encouraged to be critical readers, forming their own tastes and opinions about what they read. |
