The Curriculum

We aim to provide the highest quality teaching in order that all students learn effectively and develop a life-long love of learning. Our curriculum aims to provide appropriate challenges to enable students to realise their full potential. At Carshalton High School for Girls, students continue to develop the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and oracy.

Years 7, 8 and 9 (Click here for Key Stage 3 details)

Students are initially placed into mixed tutor groups so that they settle comfortably into a secondary school environment. Students in Year 7 take either French or German and begin a second foreign language in Year 8. All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 follow an enhanced model of the National Curriculum. From Year 8, girls are placed in ability groups in a range of subjects.

Years 10 and 11 (Click here for Key Stage 4 details)

In Years 10 and 11, students study all the required National Curriculum subjects that include some choice of GCSE options. They can take up to 10 GCSEs.

Sixth Form (Click here for 6th Form details)

Most students continue into our Sixth Form taking a range of AS/A2, vocational courses and Mature GCSE courses. More detailed information about the Sixth Form can be found in the Sixth Form Choices Booklet. This gives full details of the Sixth Form and it’s courses and entry requirements.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

All students study Religious Education, including Sixth Formers. Collective Worship has a high profile in the school enabling students to reflect on the values beliefs and traditions that the school upholds.

Personal, social, health education and Citizenship

Citizenship is a statutory requirement in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. It is taught in one lesson each week by form tutors. The three strands in the National Curriculum to be taught are:

  • Knowledge and understanding about becoming an informed citizen
  • Developing skills of enquiry and communication
  • Developing skills of participation and responsible action

These strands are developed through:
The work-related curriculum

  • Visiting speakers
  • Charity work
  • Project work

Students are encouraged to develop a clear understanding of their roles, rights and responsibilities in relation to their local, national and international communities.

One assessment is completed each term and form tutors report to parents in the annual reporting cycle.

PSHE is taught as part of the Citizenship programme. Sex and Relationship Education and Drugs Education are statutory requirements in PSHE.
