Miss Maxwell's visit to Dubai for Rivers of the World!
In the half term Miss Maxwell was lucky enough to fly to Dubai on a visit with The British Council and The Thames Festival Trust Committee. Here is her review:
"Carshalton High School for Girls has been partnered with Nad Al Hammar School in Dubai to work in many projects across the curriculum over the next 3 years. The school is all girls and has purely Muslim students and teachers. They were very welcoming and greeted me with a feast of traditional food and gifts. I was given the opportunity to observe lessons (both in English and Arabic) and also eat lunch with the headmistress and the other staff. There are 70 countries involved in the project, only a few schools have been selected to become part of it in each country.
The first Project we will be working on is an Art piece called ‘Rivers of the World’. The Art will be made in 2 separate workshops with a leading Artist during the Spring term with 20 year 8 students. This is in association with the Thames festival Trust and HSBC. The Thames Festival is one of London’s biggest festivals and lasts through the month of September. The Project work completed by our students will be displayed at this festival along the Thames in 2012, exhibited in the OXO tower as well as published on the official website and brochure.
In Dubai the ‘river’ our partner school will be focusing on is Dubai Creek so we had the chance to take one of the famous Abra boats down the creek to take in the sights and smells of the city. We went to the ancient gold souks (markets) alongside and ate a traditional evening meal outside by the creek with all the teachers and staff involved in the project. Our students wrote postcards to the UAE students to introduce themselves and our city with pictures of London and the Thames on them and the students from Dubai returned their own back about their country too. They were very impressed with these and especially with Hiba (8SJH) as she had written to them in Arabic and English.
Next September the teachers from Nad Al Hammar will come to visit CHSG to see our school and city and meet the students too. I hope many more students can become involved in this fantastic project throughout the next 3 years as their will be exciting opportunities in many of the other subjects too!"
